Uninsured Week
In an effort to reduce the number of uninsured children in Louisiana, the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana participated in the National Cover the Uninsured Week initiative, April 23-29, 2007.

During this week, fifth grade “Sick Days” were held in every parish within all twelve parishes in Region 8. This day was a fun, healthy, learning activity that involved 5th grade students. All children were given play money at the beginning of the day. Then, throughout the day, children rotated through classes with various health providers while learning about that particular health topic. Children “paid” the provider for the service rendered.

The health providers included dental, vision, nutrition and fitness. At the end of the day, children visited the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) booth and received their money back. This activity helped the children grasp the concept of “no cost health insurance for children.”
