Thursday, November 8
8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
ULM Library
All children have a right to thrive, but sometimes there are things that can hurt or help the process—these are commonly referred to as risk and protective factors. Risk and protective factors can affect children at different stages of their lives. At each stage, risks occur that can be changed through prevention intervention. The conference will present paths and CEUs for social workers, educators, medical professionals as well as parents. Topics include child-sex trafficking, trust- and trauma-informed approaches, mandated reporting, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), and ways we can work together as a community to protect our children.

This year, the What Works Conference will partner with the Ouachita Youth Summit to bring nationally known author and anti-trafficking advocate Pamela Samuels Young. Her thriller Anybody’s Daughter (2013) and the young adult adaptation #Anybody’s Daughter, is a gripping tale of a teen unwittingly drawn into the world of child sex trafficking via a Facebook scam. It won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Fiction and was a Top Ten pick by In the Margins, the best books for at-risk teens. In addition to her keynote at the What Works Conference, Ms. Young will present at the Ouachita Youth Summit (November 7) and provide a free workshop just for parents from 6:00-7:00 on November 6.
