TIME TO TALK | DRUG CULTURE AWARENESS IN TEENS TODAY

Drug culture has existed for generations, but is rapidly changing into something parents might not recognize. Jermaine Galloway, drug and alcohol trend expert, says parents might have a harder time connecting with their child because of these generational ideas, but it's not impossible.

Jermaine Galloway talks about drug and alcohol awareness, how to create dialogue with your kids about it, and how to create a healthy, safe environment for them.

Generational Changes in Drug Culture
Galloway says parents face unique challenges with their teens in today's drug culture. Everything is stronger and more available. "Higher potency means higher addiction, no matter what drug you're talking about," Jermaine emphasizes the importance of the connection of drugs and addiction.

How to Approach Drug Culture as a Parent
Studies show that the perception of harm has gone down dramatically in recent generations, making teens feel safer and more comfortable with drugs. Galloway wishes to combat this by 'holding the line' for your child. "It's your job to keep your kids health, safe and aware," Jermaine says.

TIME TO TALK | GIVING YOUR CHILD A VOICE THROUGH ADVOCACY

Child advocacy is speaking out for the best interest of children. Jan Daniels, youth development coordinator of Children's Coalition of Northeast Louisiana, discusses how to be an advocate for children and why it is important.

Jan Daniels talks with KEDM about being a child advocate.

When To Be an Advocate for Children
Jan Daniels describes advocacy as speaking out for children in the face of obstacles like bullying and strained relationships with authority figures, such as coaches and teachers. Children can run into these problems at school, after-school programs and extracurricular clubs.

How To Be An Advocate For Children
Advocacy is achieved through persistence. Daniels says, "The best thing you can do is be persistent, be consistent and ask for help." When approaching a situation, make your child's needs clear and known to people who can change and help the situation.

Daniels advises, when working with educators and a school environment, to start with your child's teacher or the principal.
In the northeast Louisiana area, there are several resources for child advocacy and children. Daniels suggests contacting the Children's Coalition or the Child Advocacy Center in Monroe.

LOUISIANA LEADERS TALK ABOUT FUNDING EARLY EDUCATION

2/12/2019

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - State and local leaders are trying to improve access to quality care and education for kids, especially for low-income families. It’s part of Louisiana Early Education Week, hosted by the United Way.

They say 90 percent of brain development happens between birth and age four, so building a solid foundation early can help children later in life.

"We’re no longer looking at early childcare as just a babysitting service. It is part of the educational continuum that actually starts at birth," says Lynn Clark, the executive director of The Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana.

She says it’s important to build an education before kids can even talk.

"It’s important that they’re in environments that are enriched, they're playing, they're moving, they're eating healthy food, they're talking, they're singing. All of those things are part of a quality childcare environment," Clark explains.

Experts say these interactions carry their education throughout life.

In fact, studies show over 40 percent of Louisiana’s kids are already behind when they start kindergarten, and kids who start behind usually stay behind.

U-ACT HONORED AT CADCA'S NATIONAL LEADERSHIP FORUM

On February 5th, the Union Parish Alliance for Community Transformation, U-ACT, was one of 112 community coalitions honored during a graduation ceremony at CADCA’s (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) National Leadership Forum, just outside of Washington, D.C. The coalitions received a graduation certificate for completing CADCA’s National Coalition Academy, a rigorous training program designed to increase the effectiveness of community drug prevention leaders.

“We are so proud of our coalition for investing the time and resources to take advantage of the best community coalition training in the world. To graduate from this year-long intensive course is no small feat and U-ACT is more prepared today to be an effective, sustainable coalition because of this training,” said Marry Barrios, Healthy Living Coordinator. “We look forward to applying our knowledge and strategies to ensure the youth in our community live drug free.”

Stemming from a DHH Louisiana Partnership for Success fund award, Northeast Delta HSA managed the formation of a collaborative coalition to address underage drinking and the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs in Union Parish. The U-ACT Coalition (Union Parish Alliance for Community Transformation) works to reduce the incidence of underage drinking and other data-driven priorities in Union Parish. This not only targets substance abuse, but also aims to have an indirect positive impact on depression, suicide, teen pregnancy, school failure and violence.

Building upon the strong system of churches, community-based organizations and culturally-relevant local media to develop trust with parents and students, U-ACT is working to create a grass-roots movement that is both sustainable and measurable. Community leaders' willingness to partner and pool resources weaves all available human and financial resources together in the best interest of Union Parish citizens. An action plan has been developed to guide coalition efforts and raise awareness of its work, which includes participation in community events and working directly with Student Ambassadors. U-ACT members continue to offer their support and work with community partners toward the health and wellbeing of Union Parish.

CADCA’s National Coalition Academy (NCA) is a comprehensive, year-long training program developed by CADCA’s National Coalition Institute. The NCA incorporates three, week-long classroom sessions, a web-based distance learning component, an online workstation where participants network and share planning products and free ongoing coalition development technical assistance. To graduate, coalitions must complete a rigorous curriculum. They must participate in all components of the NCA and complete five essential planning products that serve as the foundation of their comprehensive plan for community change.

CADCA’s National Leadership Forum is a four-day event packed with opportunities to learn the latest strategies to address substance abuse and hear from nationally-known prevention experts, federal administrators, and concerned policymakers. The Forum brings together approximately 3,000 attendees representing coalitions from all regions of the country and internationally, government leaders, youth, prevention specialists, addiction treatment professionals, addiction recovery advocates, researchers, educators, law enforcement professionals, and faith-based leaders. It is the largest training event for the prevention field.
