The Children’s Coalition is proud to announce that the Al’s Pals: Kids Making Healthy Choices has expanded to Franklin Parish Pre-K classrooms. This program is packed with fun and creative lessons and applicable opportunities to strengthen the social-emotional development and resiliency skills among our students.

Parents should be on the lookout for the colorful letters that will give you ideas to work with you child in the home.  This is a great way for parents and teachers to reinforce learning for their student!

This initiative is a continue effort as part of the Talk, Read, Play Every Day in Franklin Parish project. In addition to the Al's Pals expansion, community leaders have helped install a Born Learning Trail at Davis Park, an Early Childhood Literacy Hub at the Library and several Free Little Library locations across the parish. Thank you Franklin Parish for the continued partnership and support.

Al's Pals is funded by the Northeast Delta Human Services Authority.

Students and teenagers in Northeast Louisiana are receiving misinformation about sexual health from the internet, TV and other unreliable sources. Merion Sanderson, a registered nurse and sexual health instructor at the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana, talks about the importance of properly informing your children about sexual health in today’s society.

Parents and professionals need timely education on the laws, science, society, and culture that children are up against everyday. Time to Talk brings you accurate and appropriate information from state and local experts about issues that affect children, so that you can understand and communicate with and about them.

Through this segment, you'll develop a sophisticated understanding of the issues faced by youth today and be encouraged to confidently discuss tough topics that face our children.

Time to Talk is produced with the Children's Coalition for Northeast Louisiana, 90.3 KEDM Public Radio and BayouLife Magazine.

Puberty is one of the most important stages a child will go through growing up, and it’s crucial for them to be properly informed about what they will experience. Rena Braswell, nurse practitioner at Monroe Pediatrics, explains how to have the talk on puberty with your child and when is the best time to have it.

CHILDREN'S COALITION TEAMS UP WITH NORTHEAST LOUISIANA ARTS COUNCIL + CITY OF MONROE + LOCAL ARTIST, VITUS SHELL

  • The Children's Coalition for Northeast Louisiana is bringing more visual art into Downtown Monroe. Supported in part by a grant from the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council with funds from the City of Monroe, this initiative will include a mural within our Family Garden by Vitus Shell.

The mission of the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana is to “Create communities where children and families thrive.” The project CHILDREN THRIVE, seeks to capture the essence of this mission in our community by creating the first of a series of public art mural panels designed by muralist Vitus Shell and painted with help of children and youth in our community.

Monroe native, Vitus Shell, will work with a group of artists and local children and youth to implement the proposed project. Vitus Shell has exhibited at universities, museums, and private galleries across the country; painting a mural for the National Civil Rights Museum's NBA Pioneers exhibit; and being commissioned to do public art by the Memphis UrbanArt Commission. His artwork allows aspects of African American history to meet the complexities of African American culture in present day.

The mural will be on the fence that surrounds the Children’s Coalition Family Garden. The Children's Coalition Family Garden garden is open to the community and contains an early childhood outdoor learning center and an edible garden that feeds over 100 children in our Early Head Start centers. Over the past year, the garden has become a visible symbol of the revitalization of downtown Monroe. Situated between the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter and the Monroe Transit Bus Depot, the Children’s Coalition Family literally blooms in a desert of abandoned buildings and grey fields. The Family Garden surrounds the main office of the Children’s Coalition—a one-stop-shop that connects families to child care and parent education. In addition to the thousands of constituents served by Coalition programs each year, the garden hosts hundreds of community members each month as part of Super Saturday, a chance for families to participate in garden-based play and volunteer opportunities.

Families will be able to witness and participate in the growth of the CHILDREN THRIVE mural by observing the artistic design process in action, and then lending a hand to help create a high-quality public work of art of the course of three months. The CHILDREN THRIVE mural will celebrate who we are as a community and who we serve as an organization, by highlighting the African-American perspective in relation to the land and demonstrate how art can help CHILDREN THRIVE.

We received a special visit from Miss Louisiana, Meagan Crews! She met with Youth Development Coordinator, Jan Daniels, to learn more about the work we do to combat child sex trafficking with the Love 146 Not a #Number curriculum.

Not a #Number is an interactive, five-module prevention curriculum designed to teach youth how to protect themselves from human trafficking and exploitation through information, critical thinking, and skill development. Not a #Number uses a holistic approach focusing on respect, empathy, individual strengths, and the relationship between personal and societal pressures that create or increase vulnerabilities.

Local schools trained in the curriculum include: Carroll Junior High, Lee Junior High, Sterlington Middle School & Ouachita Junior High.
